Drugmakers seek to reassure public on coronavirus vaccine as concerns grow about political pressure

A group of drugmakers competing to bring a coronavirus vaccine to market plan to issue a public statement as soon as next week that says they will not seek government approval until enough data has been collected to ensure the drugs are safe and effective, CNBC confirmed Saturday. An early draft of the joint statement promises to prioritize the safety of vaccinated people, according to The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the plans to issue a statement. Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna are expected to participate in the pledge, the Journal reported. CNBC has confirmed that Sanofi also plans to participate. The pledge comes as scientists and public health specialists express concern that the Trump administration is exerting pressure on regulators, especially the Food a...

Staying on guard against overconfidence

It’s August in New England for the Hooper family, which means hot summer days, barbecues, and lots of time in the water. Every year at this time, my thoughts turn to the iconic movie “Jaws,” which, as regular readers of this blog may remember, is another summer tradition for me. The book came out when I was still a toddler, and the movie soon after, so I must confess that I have never felt comfortable swimming in an ocean in my entire life. In fact, I recall reading the book as a child in the car as we drove from New York to Florida for a beach vacation — and declaring after a particularly frightening chapter that I was ready to turn around and go home. I have even gone so far as to watch the documentary on the making of the movie, which was surprisingly interesting. The most shocking thi...

What Are Stock Options?

What Are Stock Options? Isn’t it nice having options?  If you’re hungry, you have a wide variety of restaurants to choose from. If you want to buy a car, you have different makers producing different models with an endless array of upgrades. It’s true that too many choices can sometimes cause paralysis by analysis, but having different options at our disposal allows us to weigh pros and cons and make informed decisions.  Traders have options too, and not just in the variety of different stocks and sectors to choose from. Stock options allow traders the right to purchase a specific security at specific price at a specific point in the future – but not under any obligation. Do you think a particular stock will be much higher in three months? Well, you can buy an option ...

Dash introduces protocol versioning in update

The Dash platform will be introducing protocol versioning and other new features in its latest update.  Dash announced its fourth update over the weekend. The platform normally releases new functionalities every six weeks, so the next update is expected between October 6 and 20.  Dash said it is adding versions of its protocol to make it easier for developers to begin transitioning to a testnet and mainnet. Previously, developers needed to wipe data on Evonet and update their platform software with each new release. The company said: “While this approach is fine for early testing, it is not appropriate for testnet and mainnet. To handle different versions of data, nodes, and clients all working in coordination, DCG developers introduced versioning that allows for the smooth ...

SoftBank option purchases raise eyebrows as Wall Street backtracks

SoftBank Group Corp made significant option purchases during the run-up in the US stock market in recent weeks as a way of temporarily investing some proceeds from asset sales, people familiar with the matter said on Friday. The trades were revealed just as Wall Street's runaway technology-led rally was faltering. The derivatives purchases could shed light on the Nasdaq and S&P 500 rise just two days ago to record highs, which seemed to put the coronavirus sell-off in the rearview mirror. In August, SoftBank Chief Executive Masayoshi Son had announced a new investment management subsidiary that would park excess cash from a massive asset sale program in liquid stocks. In total, SoftBank injected roughly $4 billion building up stakes in Amazon.com Inc, Netflix Inc, Tesla Inc, Micros...

Powering DeFi market: Overview of the top 5 DEXs by total trade volume

One of the most groundbreaking advancements to come out from within the realm of blockchain technology is the concept of a decentralized exchange. In its most basic form, a DEX can be thought of as a cryptocurrency buy/sell platform that allows its users to facilitate monetary exchanges without the need of any assets having to make their way to the exchange itself, reducing the risk of thefts, hacks and other human-related errors. Furthermore, owing to their intrinsic design, DEXs are better equipped to prevent issues such as price manipulation, trade volume inflation, etc. Similarly, from an operational standpoint, it’s important to understand that there are essentially two types of DEXs. The first one simply matches the orders of various buyers and sellers — with the entire process carr...

Spot gold below $2,000, what next for yellow metal?

Hareesh V Gold succumbed to a correction recently on optimism that the deadly coronavirus pandemic may be under control soon and that would encourage the global economic sentiment. However, prices managed to sustain above $1,900 an ounce in the international market and Rs 50,000 per ten grams in the domestic futures market. The safe-store demand for the metal has remained on the higher side since the coronavirus outbreak. In the first week of August, the benchmark London spot prices jumped to an all-time high of $2,072.49 an ounce. Rising cases in the US, the world's largest economy, has shifted investor confidence from riskier assets to safe havens like gold. A weak US currency, hopes of more fiscal stimulus measures and looming US-China trade tensions also added fuel to the bull ma...

Etsy gets into S&P 500, Tesla does not

Shares of Tesla tumbled 7% in extended trade on Friday after the electric car maker was excluded from a group of companies being added to the S&P 500, among them Etsy, whose stock market value is less than a 20th of Tesla's. The decision by S&P Dow Jones Indices is a blow to Tesla investors who widely expected the company to join the benchmark stock index after a blockbuster quarterly report in July cleared a major hurdle for its potential inclusion. S&P Dow Jones Indices said in a statement it was adding online craft seller Etsy, semiconductor equipment maker Teradyne and pharmaceutical technology company Catalent to the S&P 500, effective Sept. 21, and removing H&R Block, Coty and Kohls. Shares of Etsy jumped 6% in extended trade, Teradyne rose 2%, and Catalent ad...
