Coronavirus Vaccine Roundup, Early September

It's been a while since I went through the whole vaccine landscape (I've been putting it off!), but there's a lot to catch up on. I'm going to incorporate some slightly reworked material from my July post in the introduction to each vaccine class, for reference, but everything on the candidates themselves is updated information. That earlier post includes more background on each specific candidate that I won't be repeating here.Viral VectorsThis class uses some other infectious virus, but with its original genetic material removed. In its place goes genetic instructions to make coronavirus proteins, and when your infected cells do that, these proteins will set off an immune response. Note that this is different than being infected with a "real" virus, whose instructions are (naturall...

Five Below: A Vote Of Confidence

On the same day that the stock market underwent a rare meltdown off an all-time high, Five Below (NASDAQ:FIVE) cut against the grain. The stock traded up +9% by mid-afternoon, climbing slowly through the session, following the company's well-received fiscal 2Q earnings report. The retailer delivered an all-around beat, which it had not managed to do since last year. Revenue increased YOY, even if minimally, which caught the more cautious analysts and investors by surprise. Adjusted EPS of $0.50 soared past expectations, albeit driven in great part by lower income taxes, closing the gap between estimated 2020 and last year's earnings.Credit: Lancaster OnlineWhat drove the earnings beatWhat was perhaps most predictable about Five Below's second quarter was the significant revenue dr...

Fed Dials Up Inflation Target… Own Gold

Make no mistake, higher gold prices are coming.By pulling yet another arrow from its quiver, the Fed’s just helped move us closer to that target. The Fed wants inflation, so it’s going to get it. Problem is, we the people, will have to live with it.Fed Chair Jerome Powell told us last week they will let inflation run higher than “normal” to make up for stubbornly “below average” inflation for some time. It’s one more reason investors need to ensure they have exposure to real assets that provide protection from inflation.Of course there’s raw land and real estate, collectibles, and fine art. But these are typically illiquid, out of reach, or fully valued in many places the world over.Meanwhile, precious metals are arguably much closer to inflation-adjusted all-time lows, as I’ll s...

SPXU Enters Positive Drift Regime

The ProShares UltraPro Short S&P 500 ETF (SPXU) is one of the most popular instruments to short the broad market for trading or hedging purposes. However, its daily -3X leverage factor is a source of drift. It must be closely monitored to detect changes in the drift regime. This article explains what "drift" means, quantifies it in more than 20 leveraged ETFs, shows historical data on SPXU, and finally, concludes about the current market conditions. The analysis is also valid for Direxion Daily S&P 500 Bear 3X Shares (SPXS), which tracks the same index with the same factor and has an almost identical behavior. Why do leveraged ETFs drift?Leveraged ETFs often underperform their underlying index leveraged by the same factor. The decay has essentially four reasons: beta-slippage, ...

TCF Financial: Lower Expenses, Paycheck Protection Program To Drive Earnings

Earnings of TCF Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: TCF) declined to $0.14 per share in the second quarter from $0.32 per share in the first quarter of 2020. The earnings decline was mostly attributable to merger-related expenses and a decline in net interest margin. Earnings will likely increase in the year ahead because of accelerated booking of Paycheck Protection Program fees and lower provision expense. Moreover, the non-interest expense will likely decline following the completion of the integration of the Chemical Bank. On the other hand, the net interest margin will likely continue to decline, which will pressurize the bottom line. Overall, I’m expecting earnings to increase by 256% in the second half of the year compared to the first half. For the full year, I’m expecting TCF to report...

CVS Health Offers Investors A Trifecta Of Yield, Growth, And Total Return Potential

Remaining consistent with the theme of my previous articles, it is arguably more important now than it has been the past several years to focus on companies with strong brands that provide indispensable goods and services to its customers. One example of a company that fits the above profile, is that of CVS Health (CVS).I will be revisiting CVS Health's dividend safety and growth potential for the first time since I initiated coverage in the stock in February 2019, reexamining recent operating results and the company's risk profile, and using a couple of valuation metrics and a valuation model to arrive at a fair value for shares of the stock, which I believe collectively justifies my continued buy rating for CVS Health.Already Strong Dividend Coverage Is Rapidly ImprovingWhile CVS ...

Kalamazoo Resources: A Look At The Valuation After The Advance

It's been a busy year for Kalamazoo Resources (OTCPK:KAMRF) as the company has added to its extensive holdings in Central Victoria and is preparing a drill program to test its Sisters Gold Project, which lies southwest of De Grey Mining's new Hemi discovery. In addition to work on its early-stage projects, the company also made a surprising move, scooping up a 1.65 million ounce gold project from Northern Star Resources (OTCPK:NESRF) in Q2. The fact that Kalamazoo was able to complete the Ashburton Gold Project deal with Northern Star on favorable terms has led to a re-rating in the stock, with Kalamazoo Resources being one of the top-performing gold juniors year-to-date. However, while the stock is up more than 140% in 2020, the valuation is still very reasonable at A$0.68. Therefore, I b...

The Low Down On Magenta Therapeutics

"The only sure rule in golf is he who has the fastest cart never has to play the bad lie.” – Mickey MantleToday, we take an in-depth look at a Busted IPO that recently retrenched and raised additional capital after abandoning a mid-stage trial. A full investment analysis follows below.Company Overview:Magenta Therapeutics, Inc. (MGTA) is a Cambridge, Massachusetts, based early clinical-stage biotechnology concern focused on the development of compounds that upgrade the current immune reset process in patients with blood cancers, as well as genetic and autoimmune diseases. It has recently reprioritized its assets, leaving it with only one ongoing trial, a Phase 2 study involving a de-prioritized candidate with upcoming multiple Phase 2 trials for its mobilization agent. Weekly S&P500 ChartStorm – Retail Bulls Vs Insto Bears

Those that follow my personal account on Twitter will be familiar with my weekly S&P 500 #ChartStorm in which I pick out 10 charts on the S&P 500 to tweet. Typically I'll pick a couple of themes to explore with the charts, but sometimes it's just a selection of charts that will add to your perspective and help inform your own view - whether its bearish, bullish, or something else! The purpose of this note is to add some extra context and color. It's worth noting that the aim of the #ChartStorm isn't necessarily to arrive at a certain view but to highlight charts and themes worth paying attention to. But inevitably if you keep an eye on the charts they tend to help tell the story, as you will see below. So here's another S&P 500 #ChartStorm write-up!!1. Starting off this wee...
